Yo! This shit is so dope and original! Check this out. Hearing this put a smile on my face on some real. The production is so creative and raw and both of those characteristics are present in the lyrics and delivery as well. Too raw.
After a 2015 that included the release of 'Communist Slow Jams', 'Darkskin Manson', and a string of critically lauded shows, Baltimore's JPEGMAFIA finds himself in 2016 more pissed off than ever.
There's a presidential race in which the only non-white candidate is a right wing nut who tried to stab someone. There's a bunch of people still going on about All Lives Mattering. There's the continued existence of Hopsin, Eminem and Lupe Fiasco.
JPEG uses a pallet of warped samples, industrial glitches and hard-as-fuck beats to paint the landscapes he uses as his lyrical stomping ground. His idiosyncratic production unites the 2 conceptual halves that make up 'Black Ben Carson': NIGGER and PEGGY. The former is comprised of "gangsta shit only", while the latter shows JPEG getting "a little deeper", revealing some more of the man behind the provocateur.
'BBC' as a whole reveals JPEG at his most self-aware, reflecting on the swathes of white liberals who make up a decent chunk of his growing cult. As ever, he has no problem presenting the world from a militantly unapologetic perspective - and many may find it hard to stomach JPEG's complex mixture of radicalism, irony, provocation, absurdity, anger and general refusal to bow to all-and-any expectations.
Indeed, many of JPEG's sharpest lines can make me feel uncomfortable - but that seems exactly the point. The globally privileged few need their feathers ruffled, and Peggy's ability to ruffle feathers is second to none.
JPEGMAFIA's signature move is squaring up to the established hierarchies, systems, and values with one hand on his nine and the other on his crotch. What's more fuckin punk than that?
