Mixing teen angst and ecclesiastical grandeur, Satanic Ritual Abuse undulates between moments of controlled tension and explosions of sound and colour. Hurting archives recordings from 2009 (aged 16) until 2014, narrating a histrionic journey from adolescence into adulthood.
Hurting’s melodramatic, no-fi experiments combine samples, GarageBand presets and laptop-microphone recorded instrumentation. Drawing from a range of sub-sub-genre influences, hazy production gloomily casts over naive vocals. Central lyrical themes include the pains of loving and being loved, loss, isolation, paranoia, and various other sad boi neuroses.
Satanic Ritual Abuse (a.k.a. Josh Cohen) founded Memorials of Distinction in 2014. Due to concentrating on other artists’ projects (e.g. Porridge Radio, JPEGMAFIA, Viewfinder, Tree House, Denh Izen, Smiling Disease, and Allison’s Gate), the finalisation and release of this album has been delayed for several years.
