Allison’s Gate’s music often aims to fashion something from the accidental, and Sink or Swim is an exploration of what the creative accident might feel like. Carolina McPhail, originally from the Channel Islands, uses a combination of disparate and often isolated means and genres, which cannot always be neatly presented. Instead of shying away from this aspect of her work, in this collection of sounds she celebrates it.
Each of Sink or Swim’s tracks exists on its own as a spontaneous moment in time, escaping the possibility of revisiting in a live setting. The compositions, collected from between 2011 and 2016, find common purpose in the subject of girlhood and the weight of romantic endeavors. The album takes its title from Su Friedrich’s short film of the same name, which looks at the development and experiences of queer girlhood and womanhood.
